SOCIAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY
ZuluWaters has become a major force for change in the area. It has consolidated a number of different properties under its management, purchased and settled various animals once indigenous to the area, initiated the systematic eradication of Wattle, and participated in initiatives such as the Stewardship programme of Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife.ZuluWaters is now a proclaimed Nature Reserve, and was the first such private property to achieve this prestigious status in KwaZulu-Natal. Under its stewardship programme, Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, management partner to the Dalton Trust, promotes biodiversity in the province.
ZuluWaters has built bridges, both figuratively and literally, with the neighbouring communities, and has become an important source of employment for them. ZuluWaters doesnt simply provide jobs, however, it provides opportunities. The people of ZuluWaters are important to the functioning of the reserve and Dalton Trust takes an active interest in the community. ZuluWaters' policy of employing local people and investing in them through skills training in the workplace has lead to a number of exciting projects, from the provision of Environmental Services to a collaboration with KOOP Design making furniture from invasive alien timber.
The Dalton Educational Trust (DET), funded by visitors to the reserve and a levy on all accommodation, is transforming the standard of education available to the children of the Zulu communities neighbouring the reserve by concentrating primarily on Early Childhood Development.
